Stubbington Green Runners have undergone a minor name change after branching out into track and field athletics.

From now on they will be known as Stubbington Green Runners & Athletic Club.

The club's debut season in the Southern Men's League Division 5 West is getting better all the time. After finishing third and second in their first two meetings, they went one better at Crawley last Saturday by winning the match outright.

With 'young guns' Dave Marrott, Michael Williams and Andy Vernon leading the way, Stubbington's mainly veteran mix of road and cross-country runners picked up vital points in events as diverse as the hammer, pole vault and triple jump.

"Due to injuries and other commitments, the club were reliant on a small number of people competing in a large number of events - with just rewards," said SGR coach Andy Rogers.

That same club spirit was reproduced in the Southern Electric Wessex Young Athletes' League at Oxford on Sunday.

The Green's under-13s were the most prolific with Matthew Lambert pulling off a sprint double and a personal best long jump. Heather Wrate finished runner-up in her first ever 800 metres and Becci Gough added sprint success to her 1200m win.

As if to prove the club had not deserted its roots, Mike Harper, Chris Hall, Zippy Grice and Ian Smith collected first team prize in the previous week's Braishfield 5 near Romsey.

SGR&AC are keen to recruit more track and field competitors to complement the cross-country and road running sections on which they have built their reputation.
