ONE of Southampton's regeneration zones has finally clocked up its latest addition.

A new £30,000 clock has been unveiled at the entrance to Bevois Valley as part of the area's regeneration package.

The timepiece was meant to be there earlier this month but contractors turned up with the wrong crane.

The 20ft clock is now in place at the junction of Thomas Lewis Way and Bevois Hill and will be seen by thousands of motorists coming in and out of the city.

Other recent improvements in the area have included re-paved paths, new car parking facilities and a community garden outside the Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Onlsow Road.

Dianne Lyons, chairman of the Bevois Town Community Action Forum, said the clock, which also features a temperature gauge, was welcomed by most of local residents.

"The design went to several public meetings and people loved it then," she said.

"Hopefully, people will be pleased to now see it in place and welcome it as another addition to the wonderful improvements all along Bevois Valley.

"The appearance of Bevois Valley, even compared with 18 months ago, has now vastly improved but there is still more work to be done."

Councillor Paul Jenks, the city's regeneration chief, said they wanted something that looked good and served a useful purpose as well.

The area's other big project, the controversial Shear sculpture, is currently being constructed by students and workmen in the city.
