Saints fans were left high if not dry on Sunday as the postponement of the St James' Park match with Newcastle came too late to prevent many from completing their journey.

Steve Lodge's decision not to play the game only two hours before kick-off left supporters who had completed the trip up north baffled as to why it couldn't have been called off earlier.

Mark Travers, a Saints fan from Bassett who made the journey said: "I just couldn't believe the match was called off.

"I knew the weather was bad, that was obvious as we drove up, but when people said it was off I thought they were joking.

"There should be something done about it. The weather had obviously been bad for a while, it hadn't just crept up on them.

"This is the longest journey you can make in the Premier League, they know that and they should have tried to call it off as early as possible to save fans the huge journey."

For all those who took the official supporters coaches up it was a 14-hour drive for nothing while a rearranged fixture, possibly on a Wednesday night, will hold little appeal for all but the most ardent or most deranged.

Meanwhile other fans had made alternative arrangements. John Piernicki and his family had planned to fly up, while Mark Daley and 14 of his mates took a minibus up and stayed for the weekend complete with wigs and banners, only to find they had to spend the whole time in the pub.

At least they got something out of it!

The club have said that all match tickets will be valid for the rearranged date or a full refund can be claimed by production at the box office.

All those who travelled with the official supporters' club will have free travel to the rearranged fixture or can have free travel to another match of their choice this season, however no discrepancies in price will be refunded.
