A MAN died yesterday after his car was swept away in a four-feet-deep Ford on the Hampshire-Wiltshire border.
Police last night named the man as John Castle, 36, of Plaitford Green, Sherfield English.
A spokeswoman said the accident happened about 9.41am in Giles Lane, Landford.
She said Mr Castle was driving his white Peugeot 405 across the ford on Blackwater River when it was swept away. Mr Castle's body was found in the back seat of the car which became wedged under a footbridge.
Police from Hampshire and Wiltshire were called to the scene and a helicopter and heavy lifting equipment were brought in. But Mr Castle, who had been trapped in the car, was certified dead by a doctor at the scene. He is survived by his brother.
The news drew an angry response from one motorist who said he nearly suffered the same fate on a road at Brook, near Fordingbridge. Matt Hook, from Southampton, said the marker post at the ford he attempted to cross had no numbers on it to indicate the depth of the water.
