THE Basingstoke Indian Association held a special meeting to pray for victims of the Indian earthquake.

Members of the Indian community attended the meeting at Brighton Hill Community School on Friday evening (pictured right).

Many have family and friends affected by the devastating earthquake in Gujarat which has claimed at least 30,000 lives.

Kishor Luthra, chairman of the Indian Association, said: "One gentleman at the meeting was from Bhuj, which is the worst hit city. His family are all okay but their property has been destroyed."

Almost £2,000 was collected during the meeting, donated by those who attended and their workplaces. The money will go towards the fundraising appeal.

The local association is now planning a fundraising lunch for Saturday at the United Reformed Church in London Street.

This week, The Gazette Extra is launching an appeal in conjunction with Basingstoke UNICEF to help the children of Gujurat.
