BUS companies have faced a roadworks nightmare trying to keep services to schedule in the Eastleigh area, borough councillors were told at their February meeting.

David Airey, executive councillor with responsibility for transport, said that on the Southampton-Chandler's Ford corridor there had been ten sites featuring temporary traffic lights or roadworks.

Mr Airey said: "Some 20-minute rides are taking up to 50 minutes.

"It is also compounded by the fact that there are also major road schemes happening in the centre of Southampton."

He said that besides the extra time it was taking for journeys there were also ensuing difficulties of buses and crews being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Answering a plea from councillor Godfrey Olson, Mr Airey promised that the council would do what it could to contact the various companies responsible for the roadworks, asking them to cause "minimum disruption", particularly at peak times.
