THE good news is that the roadworks in Winchester this week will not cause rush-hour delays.

But the bad news is that workmen will work through the night instead, for two to three weeks.

Contractors will lay communications cables along Romsey Road, between Kings' School and Chilbolton Avenue, starting today.

Scottish and Southern Energy have talked to the city council and struck upon a way of avoiding congestion on the busiest road into Winchester.

Work will start at 6.30pm each weekday and the contractors have promised the council that noisy work will stop by 11pm. The road will be fully passable for traffic by 3am. No work will be done on Saturday or Sunday nights.
