THEY are prepared to brave it for their country, so a spot of rain certainly wasn't going to stop squadrons from across the county from celebrating 60 years of the Air Training Corps.

More than 200 officers and cadets turned out to mark the historic occasion yesterday, parading from Romsey School, Greatbridge Road, to nearby Romsey Abbey and back again.

Around 50 people went along to the abbey to watch the service, led by the Rev Canon Neil Crawford-Jones, before watching the parade head off, led by the bugles and drums of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing Band.

Among those present were the Mayor and Mayoress of Romsey as well as Romsey MP Sandra Gidley. Eleven squadrons turned out for the day, from as far afield as Portsmouth, Southampton and Andover.

Warrant Officer Bob Sankey, who helped organise the event, said: "It's been a brilliant day.

"The parade was excellent, the weather was kind and the turn-out superb. We couldn't have asked for more."
