WAYNE Wanklyn has quit as boss of Fleet Town after only eight months in charge of the Jewson Wessex League club.

He is the third manager to resign from the Calthorpe Park club in the past 14 months - both Trevor Norris and Chick Botley having been in charge during Fleet's latter Dr Martens League days.

Wanklyn, 40, who played for Reading and Aldershot in the Football League, got Fleet away to a seven-match winning start to the season.

But the North Hampshire club, who have ambitions to return to the Southern League, have slipped to sixth place in recent weeks.

"The faltering league position has nothing to do with my resignation," stressed Wanklyn.

"Let's just say circumstances have changed since the start of the season."

Club captain Tommy Taylor and long-serving Jesse Bone, Fleet's director of football, have temporarily taken over the managerial reins.

They would have taken charge at Portsmouth RN yesterday but, like Lymington & New Milton's scheduled trip to Cowes Sports, the match was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Fleet chairman Martin Griffiths insisted the club would be taking their time to name a successor.

He said: "We are not rushing into any permanent appointments at this stage. However the committee is confident that, in the hands of Tommy and Jesse, it will be business as usual for the team."

In-form AFC Totton are within three points of third-placed Thatcham after a creditable 1-1 draw at champions Wimborne.

A 13th-minute Steve Jones volley - his eighth goal in four games - gave Totton the edge.

However that all changed nine minutes into the second half when Scott Bundy, back defending a corner, headed into his own net for Wimborne's equaliser.

"It was a good tactical performance from us," praised Totton manager Ian Robinson.

Thatcham went down 2-1 at Brockenhurst, despite taking the lead on the hour through Stu Anderson.

Richard Cort's emergence from the substitute's bench turned the match on its head.

The youngster provided Brock's equaliser for Mark Dancer, who later popped up with the Badger's winner.

James Barfield looked set to be Fareham's match-winning hero after steering the visitors into a 2-1 lead with five minutes remaining at Whitchurch.

But, with less than 90 seconds remaining, Barfield's world turned upside-down - the youngster sending a bullet header past his own goalkeeper for United's 2-2 equaliser.

Whitchurch had held Glen Blenkarn's early lead until the 81st minute when Gary Franklin scored the first of two quick-fire Fareham goals.

A goal in each half by Kevin Youngs and substitute Graham Lindsey gave Gosport a comfortable 2-0 win over Hamble ASSC at boggy Privett Park.

Youngs, shortly to begin a three-week ban, put Borough ahead from Stuart Hensman's pass and Lindsey got the second late on.

Hamble's Ryan Towns denied Borough a third by saving Jon Wallsgrove's last-minute penalty.

"It was the first time I've seen Jon waste a spot-kick in five years," reflected Gosport boss Mick Marsh.

Two goals inside a minute by Moneyfields pair Danny Hopkins and Vikram Singh sent Blackfield & Langley sliding towards a 3-0 defeat at Gang Warily.

Blackfield, with only one win in six games, were hit by a third goal five minutes from time by Matt Lafferty.

Matt White's last-gasp equaliser for Bournemouth denied Newbury only their second win in 10 games.

Andy Callow's 60th minute opener looked a probable winner - but White made it 1-1 with only seconds remaining.

Swanage & Herston eeked out their first win since Christmas, beating Downton 1-0. James Lander hit the winner.
