Seventeen-year-old Daniel Mogridge from Fareham put in a fine performance during the two-day friendly international between Belgium Federation and the Sea Anglers Match Federation along the Belgium coastlines by coming second overall and being the top member of the 20 strong SAMF team.

The first of the two matches saw many of the competitors struggle with the top weight being just 10oz.

But the second match fished in bright daylight provided some excellent sport with Mogridge landing 57 whiting in the four fixtures, weighing 21lb to win on the day.

He was closely followed by Lymington's Chris Clark, who had 48 whiting weighing just over 20lb to finish as the runner-up on the second day.

Mike Delaney from Fareham also put in a fine performance on the second day finishing in third position with 46 fish, followed by Alex Whitfeild and Darren Phillips, both from Portsmouth, who finished well up the field.

SAMF won the two-day event by just seven points which was really too close for comfort. The return fixture will be held in North Wales during May.

Marks just to the south of The Needles continue to provide some excellent winter action with Andy Gunn, who is a member of Southampton SAC, striking it lucky while fishing from his own small boat "Grandee".

Using a five-whole squid mounted on an 8/0 pennel rig he latched into and tamed a superb specimen cod which thumped the scales down to 35lb cod.

Not to be outdone Eric Elliot heaved cod of 30lb and 8lb over the gunnels during the same trip.

Alan Hale bagged a 17 pounder. All were caught on very big squid baits.

On the beach, a cracking cod has been landed along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil by Adey Lake during an evening session.

The 40-year-old maintenance foreman, who is a member of Boscombe 7 Southbourne SFC, used a lug/squid cocktail to tempt the specimen which thumped the scales down to 22lb 5oz.

The Neptune League's annual meeting has been set for February 12 at the Marina Club in West Quay Road, Poole, starting at 7.30pm.

The BHC Open held around the shores of the Isle of Wight produced some excellent sport with 75 of the 180 competitors returning fish to the scales.

Debbie Trueman certainly showed the lads the way forward by winning the event with five flounders weighing 8lb 15oz which were caught from the River Medina.

Darren Webster was the runner-up with 11 pouting and a solitary bass weighing 7lb 15.75oz, ahead of Steve Barnaby with four flounders for 7lb 6oz.

The best specimen was a 2lb 11oz flounder bagged by Ken Jones, while the top junior was Jed Rowe with a trio of flounders weighing 4lb 9.50oz, the heaviest fish of the competition was a 7lb 5oz bass.

On the freelance front, Reg Hale has landed a cracking pair of flounder weighing 2lb 7 3lb 5oz, while Chris Carr from Chale Beach caught a 10lb bass during a session at Atherfield.

The sixth round of the Wessex Senior Flounder League held at Rockley and Hamworthy attracted 67 members with 19 returning 24 flatties to the scales.

Phil Muspratt won the event with a trio of flatties weighing 2lb 13oz closely followed by Mark Whitemoor with a solitary flounder of 2lb 12.50z.

Alan Jones came third with 1lb 14.50oz narrowly beating Baz Edwards by half an ounce.
