A MAJOR review of parking policies is to be carried out as traffic levels in Hampshire continue to rise.

Car ownership in the county is growing faster than anywhere else in the country and it is estimated that there will be at least one car for every two people in the county over the next decade.

Highway bosses have warned that these trends will put a considerable burden on the roads, as well as having an impact on the general environment.

The need for robust parking policies to help reduce traffic and encourage greater use of public transport has been recognised by the government, as well as by Hampshire County Council.

The county council has been working closely with the district councils and unitary authorities on reviewing parking policies, which have not been updated since 1991.

Further, extensive consultations will take place.
