Peter Moore has proved that after 40 years in the profession, he's made of the White Stuff.

The popular 63-year-old has risen to the top after loyal customers nominated him for the prestigious title of Milkman of the Year 2001.

Peter, from Weston in South-ampton, embodies the song made famous by Southampton comedian Benny Hill - "Ernie, The Fastest Milkman in the West" - by delivering to 400 homes whatever the weather.

The grandfather has only taken six days off sick in four decades.

His round in Sholing covers a 20-mile route every day from Vines Model Dairies, in Empress Road, Bevois Valley, where he has worked for 23 years.

Peter, of Hawkley Green, said he helped his father, also a milkman, on his round when he was a boy and joined Brown and Harrisons, when the former dairy was based in Northam, in 1961, where he met his wife Pat who was a clerk.

He said: "I'm an old hand - I love talking to my customers and knowing them.

"We see ourselves as much more than just milkmen.

"I also help OAPs change their lightbulbs, post their letters and change their fire alarm batteries.

"I am also the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood and I check up on people if their milk is still outside their door to make sure they are OK."

Peter, who works six days a week, said he enjoyed the outdoor life and could never have worked in a factory.

His manager Ian Harbut said: "If they were all like Peter, I would be out of a job because nobody would have complaints about their milkman.

"He's a real character, he has a brilliant, dry sense of humour and his customer service is amazing.

"Peter is a deserving nominee for the award."

His wife Pat said he should win the title, judging by the amount of Christmas cards they receive from his customers.

Twelve regional finalists for the competition, organised by the National Dairymen's Association, will go through to the finals on April 6.
