Hassan Kachloul is waiting to see if Tottenham firm up their reported interest after he turned down two clubs in one day.

Having rejected Saints' final offer on a new two-year deal at The Dell, the Moroccan also declined a move to Ipswich, who are believed to have been willing to pay £1 million for him.

Kachloul is now likely to stay with Saints until his current contract expires at the end of the season unless Spurs can free up funds during their take-over talks.

He said: "Ipswich were not offering that much more than Southampton so there was not much to choose between them. I now have to wait and see if anyone else comes in and agrees a fee before the transfer deadline otherwise I will move in the summer."

Manager Glenn Hoddle is disappointed that the midfielder has rejected a new deal thought to be worth around half the £25,000 a week he is reportedly seeking. But he has pledged not to let it stop him playing Kachloul when he feels it is right and the Moroccan has vowed to give 100 per cent until he goes.

Hoddle said: "We are naturally disappointed he has turned down a two-year deal but he was asking for money that was way outside our structure. We were a long way apart."

Ipswich will now abandon their attempts to sign Kachloul, who also turned them down on the eve of the season after the clubs had agreed a £1.8 million fee.

Like Saints, the Suffolk club are not willing to risk an internal pay revolt with their highest paid player thought to be on around £12,000 a week.

Tractor Boys chairman David Sheepshanks said: "We are disappointed but we are not prepared to break our wage structure. We have a good team spirit which has been the key to our success.

"We have had some long chats with Hassan who was well disposed towards our club but he has turned us down and we cannot take it any further."
