WORK will start at the end of the month to replant the avenue of trees along the well-known Ladies Walk in Andover. The original trees were planted in 1863 to commemorate the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandria of Denmark.
Some have survived and still stand alongside the path. Work has already started to upgrade the entire length of the footpath.
To complement this some of the dense, natural regeneration will be thinned out and standards (young trees, larger than usually used for new plantings) dug in to recreate the original scheme.
Jim Adkins, countryside officer for Test Valley Borough Council, has assured lovers of Ladies Walk that none of the present, large, mature trees will be damaged during the work. A portion of the overgrown hedge along the walk will also be 'laid' by a group of British Trust for Conservation volunteers NVQ forestry students from Cricklade College.
"This historic technique of hedge maintenance will prolong the life of the hedge and provide a valuable habitat for many species," said Mr Adkins.
