THE DOORS are to remain shut at the Chandler's Ford supermarket where asbestos was discovered until the beginning of March.

Bosses at Safeway say the extended closure is simply part of the ongoing refurbishment of the Winchester Road store, which was halted by the discovery last week.

Despite pushing back the reopening date from this weekend to March 6, they say no more asbestos has been found at the site and the major refit is simply going ahead as planned.

Tests on the material, which is thought to have been in the building for over 20 years, revealed it to be "brown" asbestos, which is the least dangerous of three possible types.
