SINGING legend Edmund Hockridge is coming to Hampshire to help celebrate a special anniversary.

The former West End musical star will lead the first birthday celebrations at retirement home Canberra Court, Jellicoe Avenue, Gosport.

The golden-voiced singer will recall golden moments from his showbiz past and sing some of his hits from the Fifties and Sixties.

Hockridge starred in more than 1,000 performances of Carousel and was the only singer/actor to take the leading roles in four consecutive West End shows.

His rich bass-baritone voice popularised several great songs of the era, including My Boy Bill, O What a Beautiful Morning and I've Grown Accustomed to her Face.

Now aged 81, Hockridge is still in demand as a speaker and entertainer. The Canadian-born singer will delight residents and guests by leading them in the songs he made famous.

And the youthful octogenarian is promising to reveal some tips for a long and healthy life.

Mr Hockridge will autograph his recordings of great show songs and proceeds of the afternoon will go to Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Hockridge and his wife Jackie, who will also be attending the event, have raised more than £10,000 for the charity.

Suzanne Legg, marketing manager for McCarthy and Stone, owners of the retirement home, said: "Very few West End stars can justifiably claim living legend status, but Ted Hockridge is undoubtedly one of them. Many regard him as the greatest singer in his field.

"He is a terrific raconteur with more energy than people half his age. We're honoured he should pay us a visit.''

Over 55s are welcome to attend the event free of charge next Thursday. The party begins at 12.15pm.
