TENNIS: Rob Gatrell, one of six professional players based at the Hampshire Tennis & Health Club, West End, just missed out on a place in the main draw of the Girobank Tour tournament taking place at the club this week.
Gatrell won two qualifying matches but fell at the final hurdle when he was beaten by David Robinson, who went through to the main draw, starting today.
The Girobank Tour is staged nationwide throughout the year to provide competitive tournament play for players just below Challenger tournament standard. National ranking points and prize money is at stake.
Top seed in the men's event is Tom Spinks, from Norfolk, who along with Hamphire's Nick Weal and Nick Gould, from Avon, enter the tournament tomorrow. Spectators are welcome for finals day on Saturday, starting with the ladies final at 11am.
