POLICE are appealing to the driver of a green car travelling through Romsey on Monday night to come forward because he or she may have witnessed an attempted robbery.

Det Con Jeff Cox, of Romsey CID, said a 21-year-old woman was walking past the Romsey Football Club, near the Rapids of Romsey leisure complex, about 11pm on Monday when she was set upon.

"Just before the pelican lights, she was grabbed from behind by a man who was trying to pull the bag she was carrying off her back; both straps were over her shoulders.

"She got pulled backwards towards this cutway, where I believe the attacker came from, and she started screaming.

He added"At the same time this was happening a car - which she described as an old, green car - driven from the roundabout, came along and the presence of this car was enough to scare this guy off and he ran back down the footpath."

The officer said the attacker was described as 6ft 4ins with dark, close-cropped hair, wearing a dark smooth-fleeced jacket with a zip.

He said the man had a fat face and his eyes were close together.

The driver or anyone with information can call 0845 045 45 45 and ask for Romsey CID.
