POLICE talked a man down from the top of a row of shops at Rowner, Gosport, after he threatened to throw himself off.

The young man was standing on the edge of a balcony of the arcade on Lawrence Walk between 6pm and 7pm last night.

Police were called by residents who heard him shouting threats to kill himself.

Inspector Tony Tipping, of Gosport police, said: "The young man is unwell and needs help. He didn't do anything wrong.

"He only caused a disturbance by shouting out he wanted to kill himself by jumping off the arcade. He hasn't been arrested.

"We are waiting to find out more about him and will find out which agencies can give him suitable help.''

Police tried talking the man down and there was a scuffle between him and officers when they went to pull him to safety.
