TENANTS in public housing across the Test Valley could be offered more choice in housing if the Borough Council is selected for a new government pilot scheme.

The government will choose between ten and 20 councils to be part of the scheme and has set aside £11million over the next three years.

The move comes from the Housing Green Paper released last November, which advocates choice-based letting schemes.

A Test Valley Borough Council spokesman said it was worthwhile to start work on a scheme now that outside funding was available because it would probably be compulsory to adopt such a scheme in the future.

The scheme the council proposed included: allowing tenants to move to an area they requested; allowing a transfer where no need was identified and not penalising applicants who refused offers of accommodation.
