Hassan Kachloul should know next week whether he has a future at The Dell.
His agent has given the club an idea of the salary he is looking for and it is now down to Saints to make an offer.
The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season so the club may try to cash in on him now rather than risk losing him for nothing.
Ipswich and tomorrow's opponents Tottenham are believed to be the favourites to step in if Kachloul does turn down the club's offer.
l Kachloul has now learned the date for his hearing at the FA who have charged him with violent conduct for an alleged attempted headbutt at Lee Bowyer after he had been sent off in last month's 1-0 win over Leeds. He will vigorously defend himself on Tuesday February 6.
