TOMORROW is make or break day for Basingstoke as they search for a winning formula that may enable them to escape from the mire in National League 3 South.

Defeat at bottom-of-the-table Weston-Super-Mare would be a shattering blow to already fragile morale in their bid to escape from the doomed bottom three.

Two new members have been added to the squad in recent weeks, Syd Claffey from Havant and James Waters, the West Indian international from Cheltenham. Two further newcomers may make their league debuts tomorrow, according to chairman of rugby, John Byett.

Selwyn St Bernard is another West Indian who plays in the back-row and Tom Dean is a scrum-half. Dean played for Southampton University and represented Hampshire under-21s. Byett said both should be eligible to play tomorrow.

There are no selection problems for Havant as they seek to possibly replace Basingstoke by winning promotion from London 1. They host Thanet Wanderers with an unchanged team.

Winchester, despite the defeat inflicted by Havant last week, stick with that team that finished so strongly. This means Andy Ashwin starts at scrum-half and the veterans Martin Livesey, Trevor Griffin and Steve Williams are all retained.

"We've missed having experienceto mix with our youthful exuberance," said coach, Kevin Gregory.

Portsmouth are unchanged for their London 3 South-West trip to Jersey despite slight doubts about Charlie Ross and Andy Saunders.

"It could be a tricky one," said director of rugby, Nigel Morgan. "Hopefully we'll remain unbeaten, providing our half-backs click."

Southampton host Fawley in London 4 South-West hoping to avoid the banana skin that saw them suffer a surprise home defeat at the hands of Fawley last season.

Dave Griffiths said: "We want to build on last week's second-half performance." Southampton, therefore, have named the same team.

Whether Tottonians can break into the top two of this league or not rather depends on the results they get away to teams such as tomorrow's hosts, Cranleigh.

Steve Watts and Lee Brading retain their places, while Paul Goodall is fit enough to start at scrum-half this week.

JP Cook for Kevin Baker at prop is the only alteration Trojans make as they continue to pursue Farnbor-ough at the head of Hampshire 1.

A visit to Hamble should produce another victory but coach, Richard Cheal, will not wish to see scoring opportunities squandered this week.

Hamble's lone change from the side that narrowly lost at Guernsey last week sees Phil West replace Jamie Hughes in the centre. The experienced Hamble pack may hold the key to this game.

Eastleigh recall Dan Jackson at lock for their difficult Hampshire 2 fixture at Lytchett Minster.

AC Delco add the vastly experienced Nigel Franks and Steve Lines to their squad for the visit to leaders of Hampshire 3, Fleet.
