KENT could be without star performers Andy Thomson and Gary Smith for the Liberty Trophy clash with Hampshire on Sunday week.

The international duo are one of England's representatives playing for in the World Pairs Championships at Hopton-on-Sea, Norfolk, next week - and should they reach the Sunday final they would miss the date with Hampshire at Camberley.

Because of the uncertainty over their availability Kent have chosen two teams for the Liberty Trophy: one including Thomson and Smith and one without them.

Obviously Hampshire would prefer to face the latter option and would like to see Thomson and Smith embark on a run to the final in Norfolk, but Kent secretary Barry Cook reckons his county would be virtually as strong without them.

He said: "It is a big possibility that they won't be playing against Hampshire but unfortunately there is not a lot we can do about it.

"It's a blow but not the end of the world. Andy Thomson and Gary Smith are not the 'be all and end all' of Kent, and even without them we are still a pretty strong county.

"We're not taking a win for granted as Hampshire have proved themselves to be a good side by reaching the final twice in the last three seasons - it's all down to what happens on the day."

Hampshire manager, Peter Line, said: "I hope Thomson and Smith go all the way to the final!

"Should they fall short, I am sure they would attend the gala dinner on the Saturday night and then drive down the following morning to Camberley."
