Two defensive lapses meant Southampton first team crashed 2-1 against Portsmouth & Southsea despite dominating most of the match.

Portsmouth went ahead after 20 minutes when a free-hit on the edge of the D was allowed broke to a player at the far post who scored.

Portsmouth added a second, again from a free hit, neatly deflected past the Southampton goalkeeper before Richard Watts pulled one back.

The seconds gained some revenge as they overcame P&S seconds 1-0 to stay at the top of Division 1 of the Hampshire Second XI table.

Hero of the day was Eric Holt whose goal was dedicated to his first baby, a son, born on Wednesday evening.

Fareham thirds were defeated 3-1 by the Southampton III with goals from Mark Day, Steve Quinn and David Holt.

Top of the table Southampton IV continued their bid to stay at the head of their league with a 2-1 victory over University of Portsmouth.

Scorers for Southampton were Mike Woods and Mike Gillingham, while an Anthony Heaton goal was all Southampton gained from their game with Winchester as the visitors won 4-1.

The Veterans were feeling the pinch as Winchester II Vets went into a 2-0 lead.

But a second half turn around saw Martin Wood scoring from the penalty spot and Pete Terry getting a fine solo effort to even the score.

Oxford Hawks obviously thought Southampton Masters were going to be an easy run out when they saw their league positions.

However Southampton were not ready to roll over and give away the points.

Southampton went into an early lead when Paul Meacher converted a Dave German right wing cross. Oxford got back into the game to take a 2-1 lead. A Mike Barnfield penalty stroke made the scores even before Paul Meacher struck again to give Southampton three much needed points.

A family affair helped give the Otters success when father Henry Swzinto laid on the pass for son Matthew to open the scoring 15 minutes into their game with Basingstoke Beavers.

Alex Tong then added a second before Matt got his second and father Henry scored the fourth for a 4-2 win to Southampton.

Despite taking a first half lead through Danny Morgan, Southampton under-14s lost 2-1 to City of Portsmouth, weathering a second half storm of short corners.

Hamble cruised to another win, 4-1 against Petersfield, with three impeccable strikes from Dave Foster and one from Dave Wakefield doing the damage.

Hamble IIs saw off OEs 6-1 with a hat-trick from Den Barber, M Sandall (2) and A Hattemore.

The thirds beat Salisbury 3-0 (M Williams 2, Rory Marsh), the fourths lost 2-4 to Andover (A Hyder 2) while the fifths lost 5-0 to Salisbury.
