HEADLEY put another dent in Ludgershall Sports ego as they beat them on their way back to the top of the table. King's Somborne and ABC United keep the pressure rising with fine home wins while RS Basingstoke Res were unable to raise a team against New Street 'A' and had to cancel the fixture.

Headley's 1-0 win was every bit as tight as the scoreline suggests as both defences and midfields cancelled each other out time and again. Scoring power was sadly lacking in both factions and many good scoring opportunities went begging, and had the home side dropped points in this top of the table clash they would only have themselves to blame.

Headley virtually camped in their opponent's half for nearly 20 minutes after the restart and should have had three goals but for their abysmal finishing. They were gifted the winner as early as the second minute of the game, Dominic Joselyn fired a fierce free kick into the goal area and in a moment of panic to clear, centre back Ian Bevan only succeeded in lobbing the ball over his stranded keeper. The last quarter was frantic and frenetic with the visitors trying to salvage something from a match they really needed to win, but the home side held out and just about deserved the points.

King's Somborne moved joint second in the table after their 5-2 comfortable win over Tadley Town Res, they had a three goal cushion at the interval and never really looked in any real trouble. Steve Aldridge and Robbie Courtenage raised the visitor's hopes momentarily in the second half but two late goals got things into the right perspective. Marksmen for 'Somborne were Michael Jackson (4) and Danny Ormiston.

ABC United continued their winning ways with their 6-2 win over Sutton Scotney. They were 3-0 up at half time through goals from Ryan Soper (2) and Mark Moseley but raked back on their heels midway through the second period when Scotney scored twice in five minutes with goals from Paul Maidment and Keith Mortimer. But ABC rode the storm and added three further goals in the last 10 minutes when Mark Moseley completed a hat trick and Charlie Spnecer knocked in the sixth with a minute left.

A five goal first half blitz by Winchester Castle Res left lowly Broughton Res bewitched, bothered and bewildered with nowhere to go. They tried to mount at least token resistance during the second half but could find no answer or way through a Castle side who seem to be getting their act together.

They may well prove a formidable outfit which could test and even upset a few better placed opponents along the way.

Their sixth goal was added midway through the second half when Lee Abbott grabbed his third for a hat trick. Ross Mayes scored two and Ian Hamilton weighed in with his first goal for the club.

There was one unsavoury incident when Broughton substitute Michael Powell, only on for three minutes, got sent off for allegedly striking an opponent.
