Labour councillors in Southampton are set to have their knuckles rapped over claims of financial mismanagement at the Civic Offices.

A censure motion will be put forward at this week's council meeting by the Liberal Democrat group - but they must secure the support of the Tories if they are to succeed with their public "telling off" for the Labour administration.

The motion is being proposed by Liberal Democrat group leader Adrian Vinson in the wake of revelations that the council will be £22 million in the red in 2001/2002.

He will attack Labour's "failure to keep a grip on this year's spending" - which has resulted in £2 million being drawn from savings in the mid-financial year.

And he will accuse the ruling group of following policies that aggravate the council's present financial predicament and for keeping the rest of the council and the public in the dark over financial matters for political gain.
