OLA ONABULE, a Londoner who spent his formative years in Nigeria, plays The Brook tonight (Fri) and aims to prove that he has "more soul than sense" in his Southampton debut.
Inspired by soul masters like Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and James Brown, Onabule formed his first band, The Diplomats, in Nigeria before returning to England to continue his education.
He resumed his singing career while studying Art at Middlesex University in the mid-1980s, eventually
getting a deal with Elektra Records in 1990. The deal only lasted nine months but, undeterred, Onabule set up his own label, Rugged Ram Records.
His current tour promises to bring his passionate brand of soul to a wider public. For tickets and information, call The Brook on 023 8055 5366.
