A NEW city centre manager has been appointed to promote Southampton throughout the region.
Ian Rothwell is the new figure at the helm after moving from a similar role in Salisbury.
The 39-year-old brings a wealth of experience to his new post, which is supported by the city council and city centre businesses.
Mr Rothwell, a father of three, became Salisbury's first city centre manager in 1998. Previously, he was a Nottingham city councillor.
He said: "I am really looking forward to the challenge of city centre management in Southampton.
"I want to build on the great potential there is in an already-thriving environment, and to ensure that I look after the interests of all city centre businesses.
"It's great to be joining Southamp-ton at such an exciting time when the regional importance of the city is increasing rapidly. I see my role as enabling a strong partnership between businesses and the city council to continue improving the city for everyone who lives, works and visits."
Executive member for environment and transport Councillor Richard Williams said: "As Southampton asserts its place as a regional shopping and commercial area, we are pleased to have someone with considerable relevant experience who has worked in the region."
City centre management board chairman Robin Morrison said: "I am delighted to welcome Ian to this important work in Southampton."
Christine Roberts will continue to work as assistant manager.
