MATCH of the day in Hampshire tomorrow is undoubtedly the London League 1 clash between Winchester and Havant at Nuns Road. This game is of vital importance to both teams, but for vastly different reasons.

Havant require a victory to stay in touch with the leaders and maintain their push for promotion, while Winchester need to arrest an alarming slump in form which has seen them concede 115 points in their last three league outings and also slump into the bottom four.

That is perhaps why they have resorted to recalling seasoned veterans.

Martin Livesey returned last week and tomorrow he is joined by those old war-horses in the pack, Steve Williams and Trevor Griffin. Andy McNamara is recalled at full-back, Andy Patience introduced at centre and Rob West switched to the wing.

No such worries for Havant who go with the same side that accounted for Harlow last week. The first meeting at Havant resulted in a 16-13 home victory in appalling conditions and tomorrow's meeting could well be equally tense.

Basingstoke host Blackheath in a National League 3 South game of great importance to both if they are to escape relegation. Basingstoke coach, Nigel Redman reflected: "In footballing terms, Saturday is a real four-pointer. We need to keep Blackheath well below us. Although we won at Blackheath, we need to disregard that and concentrate on winning on Saturday."

Portsmouth continue their quest for promotion from London 3 South West with a visit to Old Emanuel. The selectors have resisted the temptation for changes following last week's surprise cup defeat, with Director of Rugby, Nigel Morgan saying: "It's like starting again after the huge break and that unfortunate loss."

Southampton travel to Old Reedonians in London 4 South West and make several changes despite not playing last week. Marcus Coffin and Grant Whiteside are recalled to the pack, Ross Bailey makes his debut at scrum-half and there are several positional switches in the backs.

Trojans host New Milton in Hampshire 1 with enforced changes in their back division. John Tolcher broke his jaw at Romsey, so Alastair Brooster switches to centre and Oluseyi Segun is recalled on the wing to replace Brooster.

Fordingbridge are playing the delayed Tetley's Bitter Junior Vase 5th round tie against Law Society tomorrow at Fordingbridge.
