A FATHER and son had a lucky escape from a bedroom fire at their Hampshire home.
Firecrews from Gosport and Fareham attended the blaze in Harwood Road, Bridgemary.
The smoke alarm had failed to alert the householders as the batteries had been removed.
The father, who attempted to put the fire out himself, was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, but the boy was not thought to be harmed.
Sub Officer Andy Eades, of Gosport, said: "It could have been a lot worse. Had this happened at night when they were all in bed, it would have taken some time to be discovered."
He said the cause of the fire was unknown.
* In a separate incident, a motorbike was destroyed in a fire in a garage in Harris Road, Bridgemary.
