HAMPSHIRE police are reinforcing the 'don't drink and drive' message during the festive season.

The force is backing the Government's 'Seasons Greet-ings: drinking and driving is one Christmas tradition we can do without' campaign launched last month.

With the festive season fast approaching, police are reminding drivers not to drink and drive for their own safety and for that of other road users and pedestrians. It is not only at the time of consumption that people should be aware of the effects of drinking and driving, but often many hours later and in some cases the following morning.

The police are appealing to drivers to think about the consequences of their actions and to be responsible and make alternative transport arrangements.

If you intend to be a passenger in a car with a driver you know has been drinking, do not travel with them, and encourage them to take alternative means of transport.

Last year Hampshire police carried out 394 breath tests between 18 December and 2 January, with 35 producing positive results.

Road safety inspector Peter Hughes wants to see a significant reduction in drink/driving related incidents and fatalities.

He said: "Despite repeated warnings all year round, some drivers still act irresponsibly when consuming alcohol and don't consider the dangers of drink/driving.

"The festive season is a time for enjoying one's self, but people should not drink and drive."
