IT took new local gymnastic club Horizon TeamGym just two weeks to enter their first competition.

The Southern TeamGym Open Championships at Basingstoke Gymnastic Club saw teams compete for medal positions in the Junior category from as far as the Isle of Man.

Horizon, specialising in team gymnastics, took the bronze in the junior women's section with a score of 21.90 and the junior mixed with a score of 20.10.

Head coach Lisa Elkin said: "TeamGym is a fantastic sport to gymnastics consisting of six to 12 gymnasts, a synchronized floor routine, tumbling and trampette. Our name Horizon was chosen by the gymnasts themselves and we have trained really hard to make this first competition one to be proud of.

"After a rocky start they fought back with sheer determination and all achieved personal satisfaction in one form or another. The gymnasts now know they have a lot to do in preparation for the qualifying round to the British Championships in January at the London Open."

Elkin added: "A big well done must go to Sarah Critchley, Kirsty Hodges, Katie Bonsor, Carl Terrey, Sam Yeates, Philippa Dalley, Jack Harrison, Melissa Harley & Sonia Guy for their efforts on tumbling, Nicky Vincent, Stacey Dicks, Lauren Sharp & Vanessa Sookool on trampette, plus the team captains Jon Makin & Nicky Vincent."

She also paid tribute to coaches Debbie Yeates, Carol Critchley and Les Hodges "for all their support and enthusiasm."
