THE OPENING of WestQuay has been hailed as a major landmark in the history of the city of Southampton.

Centre chiefs and council leaders say the huge mall will attract vast numbers of shoppers and other visitors to the city.

City council leader June Bridle said: "This is a very special day for Southampton and for the whole region.

"WestQuay will bring many millions more visitors to the city, not just to the development, but to both new and already-established businesses throughout the city.

"It has already brought thousands of jobs both during the building process and in staffing the new shops.

"It will go on to generate more employment as the extra visitors to the city create jobs. These are exciting times to be in the city of Southampton."

John Arnold, executive member for strategic and economic development, said: "This is a great and decisive day for Southampton, and it is wonderful to be here making the city's history.

"With the opening of WestQuay, Southampton reclaims its position as the regional capital.

"It has taken more than ten years of struggle to produce this triumph.

"It is a triumph for our belief that Southampton should be a leading European city."

John Richards, chief executive of developer Hammerson, said: "Our vision was to create more than just a shopping centre.

"We believe WestQuay will be a vibrant and cosmopolitan retail and leisure destination."
