A MOTHER was shocked to discover a hazardous cleaning chemicals packet in a fast food meal served to her young daughter.

The contents of the clear plastic package were marked as irritants and it carried a warning label that it should be kept away from children.

It was found open and empty at the bottom of a McDonald's Happy Meal, bought from the Above Bar restaurant, Southampton.

Jeannette Arnold, 32, from Cleethorpes Road, Sholing, Southampton, was horrified as four-year-old Zoe had finished her meal by the time the alarm was raised.

Zoe showed no sign of ill-effects, but despite an apology and meal tokens from the burger-giants, Jeannette is still concerned.

She said: "At the end of the day I would rather that children were safe. My daughter is worth more than a few tokens, and I am sure other parents would feel the same.

"It was a shock to find it as children pick things up and put things in their mouths.

"I was really upset for my daughter, thank goodness she was alright."

A McDonald's spokesperson said: "We are disappointed to hear that the customer is unhappy with the way we have dealt with her complaint.

"The health and safety of our customers is of the utmost importance and we are fully investigating this isolated incident.

"We will be contacting the customer directly to discuss the findings."
