CHAMBERS the cat, the lovable moggy mascot at a Southampton sports centre, took a giant leap for charity at Southampton Sports Centre.

A crane hoisted Chambers - also known as Duncan Anderson, 29, of Bryanston Road, Bitterne - 165ft into the air at a major bungee jump charity event to raise funds for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust.

About 80 jumpers took part but it was Chambers and the rest of the team from Chamberlayne Leisure Centre who caught the imagination of onlookers.

Immediately after his daredevil leap for charity, Duncan said: "I'm glad I did it - but I'm also glad I was wearing the cat suit so I couldn't look down."

The Chamberlayne team - which also included Simon Dando, Jon Mitchell and Kevin Anton - is hoping to raise up to £500.

A spokesperson for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust said they hoped to raise around £6,000 from the event and she added that it was the first time a jumper had worn a novelty suit for their charity leap.
