MORE than £20,000 has been raised for the John Merricks sailing Trust through a major fundraising campaign during Skandia Life Cowes Week.

Organisers of the sailing fiesta picked the trust as the official charity of the regatta.

Founded two years ago after John died in Italy, the trust aims to harness the goodwill shown towards the late Olympic medallist and further his name through helping young people in sailing.

Highlights of the week's fund-raising included Ian Walker, Richard Sydenham and Andy Beadsworth serving behind the bar at the Pier View on the first Sunday; Lou Varney pledged to have his world-famous moustache removed and Tim Sewell from Skandia Life raised pledges for the trust by having his hair dyed blue.

An auction held at the Island Sailing Club raised more than £11,000.

John, who worked in Hamble, was killed in a road accident during the Melges 24 European Championships in October 1997.

He had won a silver medal in the Atlanta Olympics the previous year in the 470 class and was well known for his outstanding skill and versatility.

His parents, Dennis and Joan Merricks, were in Cowes for the fundraising venture.
