A WELL-KNOWN Southampton landmark will soon be transformed into a trendy waterfront eaterie.

City planners have given the go-ahead for Harbour House, the former Harbour Board headquarters, to become a restaurant with bars and function rooms.

The Grade II-listed building dates from 1910 and boasts many original features such as an elegant entrance hall, wood panelling and ornate ceilings.

In recent years it has been used for offices but the change of use is set to give it a new lease of life.

Chairman of the Development Control Board, Councillor Sue Blachford said: "I welcome this application and I hope it will halt the years of deterioration this important building has suffered." An unsightly rear extension will be replaced with a new glazed structure offering diners views over the waterfront and allowing passers-by to glimpse the majestic interior of the original building.

Ian Butter, of Humberts Leisure, said the development was being undertaken by Inspired, the property arm of brewing giant Ushers.

"It will be a restaurant/caf bar with function rooms upstairs. There are many wonderful features that the public will be able to see, including original marquetry flooring upstairs depicting the points of the compass," he added.
