CARNIVAL fun came to Southampton when a group of disabled adults began work on their costumes for this year's festivities.

The people, who attend Semble House resource centre, in Handel Terrace, worked with professional carnival costume experts Renegade to get a head start on the colourful get-up they will don for the street extravaganza on July 29.

Mermaids, pirates and a yellow submarine all started to take shape during the day-long workshop.

It is the first time the group has entered the carnival, whose theme this year is maritime history, myths and legends.

Day service officer Sue Bishop said: "I went to watch the carnival last year and it looked livelier than in previous years and it was supported by quite a few different groups but no people with disabilities seemed to be in it. I thought we should be involved in it. Today has been really fun and enjoyable and we have all had a really good time."
