TEENAGER Nadine Harder has fixed her sights on a university place studying criminology. . . but first she is set to become an arresting sight at Eastleigh carnival.

The 17-year-old has just been crowned as this year's carnival queen and says she is still recovering from the shock of being selected.

"I entered the competition a few times before and really didn't think I stood that much of a chance of winning," said Nadine, who comes from Valley Park, Chandler's Ford.

"It is a great opportunity to get to meet a lot of people as well as travel and have some fun at the same time."

The youngster, who is currently studying for A levels at Tauntons College in Southampton, has set her mind on a career in the police force.

Also selected at the annual evening to chose the town's carnival court were princesses Lauren Waley, 11, from Boyatt Wood, and Chloe Baptiste, who lives at Bishopstoke.

The pair are friends and fellow pupils at Shakespeare Junior School at Eastleigh.

Later this year Eastleigh's annual week of fun gets under way and runs from August 12 to 20.

The carnival court will then be presented with prizes, which include holiday vouchers and the chance to visit Paris or Disneyland Paris.

Also in store for the youngsters is a five-day trip to represent Eastleigh at the Rhine carnivals in Germany.

Applications to take part in the carnival procession - which this year is based on a transport through the ages theme - can be obtained from Keith Hibberd on 023 8061 5955.
