IWAN Thomas has made his first strides towards a track comeback.

Southampton's European and Commonwealth 400 metres champion was put through some gentle paces by coach Mike Smith at Trojans Rugby Club, Eastleigh, this week as the countdown begins to the Sydney Olympics.

Thomas, whose 1999 season was wiped out by ankle trouble, said: "It was only simple stuff, but it's a start. I've got to take it easy for the first few weeks and I shall be running one day and resting the next to see how the ankle reacts."

Thomas is off to Devon with Smith's sprint group tomorrow for the annual training weekend at Saunton Sands but the 26-year-old will be taking it easier than normal.
