Bex Sharr gave Southampton a flying start against Horsham but two lapses in concentration during the second half saw them beaten 2-1.

Sue Crowley's cross set up Sharr for that breakthrough and good midfield play by Nicky Tarry, Crowley and Debbie Walker plus smart goalkeeping from Linda Dunham helped keep Southampton in front until Horsham pounced twice on mistakes to snatch the verdict.

Southampton should have levelled ten minutes from time but an unmarked Jo Horsley shot wide.

The second team claimed their first point of the Millennium when they drew 1-1 with Trojans through Beth McNaught-Davis who scored from a Karen Jordan corner.

The fourth team went down 1-0 to Basingstoke despite having the greater territorial advantage, the fifths drew 0-0 with an experienced Basingstoke side thanks to defenders Sian Glaze and Sue Adams while the under-14s won 9-0 at Havant.

City of Portsmouth's second XI lost 3-0 to Aldershot & Farnham firsts, the thirds had two goals apiece from Jenny Turvey and Crystal Sims to thank for their 4-1 success against Fordingbridge while the fourth string fell 2-0 to Alton.

Portsmouth's under-15s faced Portishead Firebrands in the English Hockey Association Cup. Portsmouth took the lead through Crystal Sims but Portishead, who have won the competiton for the last two years, equalised.

That was the way the scores stayed to take the game into penalties. After the first round the score was 4-4 but Firebrands won 6-5 to reach the quarter-finals.
