EASTERN Art Gallery owner Gary Shepherd is flabbergasted that thieves have managed to swipe a valuable Persian carpet from right under his nose.

The opportunists enter-ed the shop on Broad Street in Alresford on Friday afternoon, and while Mr Shepherd was momentarily distracted lifted the rug off the wall.

Measuring 11ft x 8ft, and valued at £4,000 the carpet would have taken at least three men to carry it.

Mr Shepherd, 31, said: "I'm very annoyed. It was a valuable carpet and I'm now having to reassess all my security."

If anyone saw people carrying a carpet in Broad Street, please contact Alresford police station on 01962 733454.
