CRUISING specialist John Power has taken over as chairman of Cowes Yacht Haven.

He succeeds David Cheverton, former owner of Cheverton Boats and High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, who was instrumental in the formation in 1992 of the Cowes Town Waterfront Trust. This is the organisation which has directly influenced the stature of Cowes as the world's top yachting centre, and with it, the fortune of Cowes and the island's economy. He remains chairman of the Cowes Town Waterfront Trust.

A retired property developer, Mr Power is well-known for his commitment to Cowes having been the inspiration and driving force behind Cowes Yachting. This is the organisation which has worked consistently to market Cowes as a centre of excellence.

He also represents other local bodies and is a long-term trustee of the Jubilee Sailing Trust. Accountant Alan Young has been appointed to the Yacht Haven board.

He has considerable international business experience in the computer industry, and currently runs the Island Sailing Club's cruising fleet. All directors are volunteers.

Permanent staff member Steven Cole has been promoted to deputy marina manager.

His main role involves the handling of berthing inquiries.
