TWO burglars managed to trick their elderly victims into believing they were only concerned neighbours.

The pair even had the audacity to show the pensioners where intruders had broken in through a window at their Southampton home.

Police said it was only afterwards the elderly couple both in their eighties discovered their £600 pension savings were missing.

Today Sergeant Tony Davis, of Portswood police, said. "The incident caused them considerable shock and trauma which is likely to continue for several days.

"We have offered them support and counselling through the Victim Support service."

The burglars broke into the couple's four-storey home in Middle Street, off Inner Avenue, around 8.30pm on Friday.

Police said they had trespassed through gardens before climbing on to a flat roof and breaking in through a window.

Once downstairs they came face to face with the elderly occupants, and told them they had been burgled.

Posing as neighbours, the intruders helped the couple look around the property and even pointed out the window, saying it must have been how the thieves climbed in.

But later that night the couple realised their savings, purse, a bus pass and keys had been stolen by the supposed Good Samar-itans.

Both conmen were white, in their 30s, around 5ft 8in tall with unrecognisable "funny" accents.

One had weathered skin while the other was very pale. Ring Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
