A WINCHESTER company is poised to break into the American health business following the approval of its equipment to diagnose the risk of osteoporosis by US authorities.

McCue's clinical bone sonometer, the device which diagnoses the risk of future bone fractures caused by the condition, already satisfies clinical and safety requirements of the European Medical Device Agency, and has just gained clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration.

It follows evidence from five separate studies carried out in this country, Ireland, Holland and the US.

The system measures the strength of patients' bones and can provide an indication of the future risk of fractures so that doctors can prescribe the best form of preventative action.

"It has significant potential as a low-cost screening device for everyone at risk from osteoporotic fractures,'' said Ian McCue company spokesman.
