Ipswich have been forced into a major re-shuffle ahead of Monday's FA Cup third-round tie against Saints after defender Gary Croft was jailed for four months.

The £750,000 full-back hung his head in tears as he was sent down yesterday after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified and uninsured and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Despite the publicity of a high-profile move from Blackburn, Croft gave a false name to police after being stopped for driving while banned. Officers recognised him playing for Ipswich.

Now manager George Burley will replace him with Dutch defender Fabian Wilnis for Monday's televised home clash with Southampton.

Meanwhile Saints boss Dave Jones is waiting on the fitness of Hassan Kachloul, who is struggling with a back problem but hopes to train tomorrow.

However there is better news of Marian Pahars (dead leg) and Trond Soltvedt (knee), who both returned to training yesterday.

Jones said: "We did not think we would have Marian with us yesterday but he has responded well to treatment and seemed to come through OK, as did Trond. Now we are just waiting to see if there is any reaction."

Paul Jones reports no further problems with the knee injury which has restricted his kicking in recent games.

Matthew Le Tissier is being quoted at 66-1 for the vacant Pompey manager's job, the same odds as Ruud Gullit and Terry Fenwick but less than Dave Jones at 80-1.

Le Tissier laughed: "Unless you have cash to burn, I would not put any money on it. I certainly won't be placing a bet.

"I was sad to see Alan Ball go though. I got on well with him and played the best football of my career when he was at The Dell."
