Oyvind Leonhardsen gave a well-drilled Spurs side victory over Saints at the Dell with eight minutes to spare.
The Norwegian midfielder drove in from 14 yards from Tim Sherwood's free-kick in a game of few clear-cut chances.
Saints then had Claus Lundekvam sent off two minutes into injury-time for a second bookable offence as he tried to tackle Iversen from behind.
He had already been booked by fussy referee Steve Bennett who cautioned six players in a game which was never dirty.
One of those was Marian Pahars who was deemed to have dived just 15 seconds after the break when Saints felt they should have had a penalty.
Chris Armstrong dropped a cross on to the Saints bar and Justin Edin-burgh cleared off the line from Matthew Oakley's throw. Stuart Ripley also went close.
