FARMERS and growers have reaped the benefits of higher incomes - thanks to a series of special markets held in Winchester during the summer.

Local stores have also revealed their takings soared by 30 per cent on the days when the farmers' markets were held in the city centre.

The three markets, which gave farmers the opportunity to sell locally grown produce direct to the public, attracted more than 30,000 customers from across the county.

Research by Sparsholt College has shown that there is strong demand from the public and the farming community for farmers' markets in Hampshire.

A survey indicated that 97 per cent of people would like to see the markets held on a regular basis, while farmers would like to see them take place monthly, or even weekly during harvest time.

The markets were set up by Hampshire County Council with the support of the city council, Hampshire Training and Enterprise Council and the Hampshire Economic Partnership.

"Hampshire farmers' markets have been a tremendous success," said chairman of the county council's economic prosperity committee, Michael Woodhall.

"There is obviously strong public demand for fresh, local produce and we are now planning a programme of markets across Hampshire next year.

"The venues and dates for these are currently being decided with local councils and we hope to publish details in the New Year."

n A special Christmas farmers' market is to be held in Winchester on Sunday, December 19. It will be set up in Middlebrook Street from 10am to 2pm.
