WITHIN the next ten days, the first lorry containing 10,000 shoeboxes packed with toys is due to set off from Southampton, headed for Kosovo - bringing hope and joy to children in the war-torn area.

The Operation Christmas Child project, run by Samaritan's Purse Inter-national, and backed by the Daily Echo, has been a great success - thanks to you, our readers.

Last week, project co-ordinator Lewis Aubry collected boxes from five schools in Hampshire, including Lockerly Primary School near Romsey, transporting them back to the charity's warehouse in Eastleigh.

A dedicated team of eight volunteers at base is busy sorting boxes into male and female presents and packing the first lorry.

Eileen Jones, a packaging volunteer from Bitterne Park URC, said: "The response to the Echo appeal has been fantastic.

"I've been involved with the charity for five years but the enthusiasm from churches and schools this year is very exciting."

She added: "I've been driving around Hampshire collecting boxes from a wide range of groups, and individuals, and also giving talks in schools.

"My own church has collected 60 boxes and I very much hope to go out with one of the lorries before Christmas."

Samaritan's Purse International hopes to send out 80,000 shoeboxes of toys this year.
