Winchester police were today hunting a hit-and-run driver who left a pensioner with serious injuries last night.

Ian McKee, 83, broke a leg and suffered head injuries in the incident on the pedestrian crossing at North Walls by the junction with Park Avenue at about 10pm.

The police are searching for a white Rover 8 Series saloon car which failed to stop and drove off at speed.

They have appealed for information from witnesses or for anyone who has seen a white Rover which has been recently damaged.

Today officers will examine CCTV footage from city centre cameras to see if the car and its crucial registration plate can be spotted.

They will also undertake door-to-door inquiries in the North Walls area in case anyone saw the incident. Checks will also be made with local garages.

Mr McKee was returning home when he was struck by the car. A witness ran to the nearby police station to raise the alarm.

Mr McKee, of Park Avenue, was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital where his injuries were last night described by a police spokesman as "serious but not believed to be life-threatening".

A Winchester police traffic spokesman said today: "Mr McKee was crossing the pedestrian crossing when the car came down North Walls and hit him while he was still on it."

Mr McKee's condition was today described as "stable" by the RHCH.

Anyone with information should call Sergeant Mike Streeter on 01962 841555 or the confidential Crimestoppers number 0800 555111.
